Consulting

I work with a couple clients at a time on growth engineering, marketing, & design-focused engagements for sites built on Rails.

If you're looking for a Rails-focused growth engineer please reach out: kane@fixture.media.

Capabilities

I'm full-stack on Rails and have worked on everything from CI and dependency upgrades to a number of complex full feature builds, but my areas of core expertise are:

  • Growth & Product
  • SEO & Content Marketing
  • Design & UX
  • New App Development

Sometimes I work on engagements that are more technical, helping teams sort out technical SEO issues across their site. Other times they're more product-focused, helping to build out new content and product efforts designed to grow users, traffic, or conversions.

With that said, I will probably implement a lovely parallel Github Actions CI setup if you don't give me anything else to work on.

Recent Project Examples

🔙 Converted a headless CMS-hosted Blog back to Rails using the everything-is-a-Post approach.

  • Built out multiple content collections using Post model and routed collections
  • Wrote import script from headless CMS's JSON export to get content back into Rails on all environments
  • Built admin-only Post editing section of the site so operations and marketing staff could edit content alongside existing developer admin users. Post editing used existing ActionText & ActiveStorage integrations to keep maintenance minimal.
Initial commit files on functioning Posts setup routed through /blog/ and a second content subfolder. ViewComponents generated for public-facing index & show pages.

👉 Supply-side user acquisition strategy for two-sided marketplace.

Which landing pages & editorial articles need to exist in order for us to position ourself as a good solution to these specific service provider user types? What are the best ways to reach potential recruitment partners via email, phone, or direct mail programs?

👉 Full Bootstrap 4 -> Tailwind & ViewComponent conversion spanning 300+ view files and 12k lines of code.

The final PR once we were ready to delete Bootstrap 🤩

👉 Technical SEO auditing & implementation on Rails 7.1 app.

Sometimes you just need somebody who can slog through some meta tags.

👉 Page taxonomy and SEO strategy for AI-generated UGC product.

Which pages do we index? What landing pages need to be created? What's our content review plan as users generate new pages?

👉 Migrating Webflow marketing site back to Rails and unwinding a custom NGINX reverse proxy.

It was just an endless stream of these types of PRs.

My Background

I've been working on Rails since 2018, when I started converting my agency Content Harmony into a SaaS platform that I've been working on since.

Beyond that, I've spent the last 15 years of my career working on SEO & content marketing engagements with over 100 clients, and at times with an agency team of 2 to 12 staff. Most of that time was spent focused on large-scale content marketing & digital PR programs with household brands.

In short, we helped teams grow organic traffic that was valuable to their brands:

eCommerce client since 2020.
Healthcare industry client since 2019.
Individual 60-page content directory for a client built in 2021.

While my agency always focused on SEO & content marketing engagements, I've always been a fairly broad builder and marketer, working on UX, web design, sales, broader client strategy, analytics, etc.
